Plaid skirts have officially come back. Yup, that image of Alicia Silverstone wearing a yellow plaid skirt and blazer has forever been on my mind as it signifies an iconic status- classic chic. After the plaid blazers, worksuits and trousers (and tracksuits!) came out this year, you know the skirt will eventually return. And for a good reason, it is totally a staple in anyone’s closet.
I personally didn’t used to like plaid. I thought it was for the “oldies” and some colors look awkward, not to mention very ill fitting. They do come in various lengths and colors, and I just always thought it was such a dated look, should only be worn in the office and I just didn’t think I could ever pull it off.
Fast forward to the a couple of months ago when plaid and blazers were all over the place. I mean literally, everywhere from high end designers to budget brands. I couldn’t help but wander, is this going to fit my style? And surprisingly it did! I no longer loathe the thought of plaid! 😉I found ways to incorporate it in my style and it was surprisingly easy. In today’s post I’m going to share how to style plaid skirts for this Fall season.
Plaid skirt FOREVER21 get it here similar one here. Sweater NORDSTROM get similar here. Bag REBECCA MINKOFF find similar here and here.
Depending on the length, a plaid skirt is so versatile, heck this style can be worn by school girls to older women running errands around town. This is an instant classic you can wear both casually and in formal settings. Here are some cute variations you may want to try while wearing a plaid skirt.
With sweaters and boots. Cooler weather means covering up- or not. Just like what I’m wearing here, you can look cute but still be comfy in the crisp air. The key is to find pieces that are warm enough for the outdoors if you are planning to show some leg. 😉
With tights underneath. I like to match the the tights with one of the colors of the skirt patterns for cohesiveness for the look. Like when I am wearing this skirt here, I’d use a pair of black tights underneath for that preppy style.
With graphic tees on casual days. I prefer form fitting types of shirts when wearing both mid to shorter skirts as this actually shows off the body’s natural curves as opposed to bigger/baggier ones.
With heels or pumps for mid to longer varieties. This is for formal settings like in the workplace, going to court or any event which requires more dressier attire. If it’s just a day out with friends, go ahead and wear them sneakers girl! 😍
With a leather jacket. A cute sweater or shirt, boots and a leather jacket is so badass and is totally rocker chic!
With it’s matching plaid blazer combo. Gossip Girl vibes here. Or Clueless for those who are more nostalgic! The school girl outfit never looked this good!
Boots ALDO similar here and here. Sunglasses QUAY AUSTRALIA get them here.
These are just some outfit suggestions you can play around with. Go ahead and try new looks you haven’t tried before! 😉 And if you’re plus size, don’t be afraid of shorter skirts and enhance your legs, or arms etc. Find one that fits comfortably and you can totally rock any skirt! A tip: the bolder the color of your skirt, the more you are drawing attention to that body part. A yellow skirt is an instant attention grabber, so if you don’t want that, stay away from bright colors on your ‘problem areas.’
I personally like bright colors this time of the year as I feel like the weather becomes blah sometimes and bright colors are an instant pick me upper! My fave plaid skirt colors are black, gray and also pink and white varieties.
What do you think of this plaid skirt trend comeback? Or plaid in general? Do you already wear it or stay away from it? Let me know and share me your style tips on the comments below! 😊

I used to wear a lot of plaid skirts back in the day – and I was ridiculed mercilessly for them, probably by the same people who are now snatching them up at ridiculous boutique prices as opposed to buying secondhand (Goodwill has TONS of these!). I am a bit amused by it, I suppose.

Oh I agree totally! There are a ton of great pieces in Goodwill! And yeah sometimes the highest prices aren’t certainly the best! Thanks Mykki!:)
