Within the recent years, street style as evolved so much, it really has exploded in my opinion. What used to be ‘mundane’ everyday pieces has attracted designer powerhouses such as Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Chanel and so on. Yup most can remember last year’s Louis Vuitton x Supreme collaboration as epic.
The lines were ridiculous, finding a piece online was nearly impossible, if you’re not willing to part with huge amounts of moolah, well basically it was such a huge success that most designers have started paying attention and crafting their own versions of street style.
As for me, street style clothing was not really my cup of tea in the past, I just felt that it wouldn’t work for my body type and I wasn’t ‘fierce’ enough to wear it. But lo and behold, I recently have come to love them and have been living in sweatshirts, hoodies and biker shorts these days. In today’s post, I’m sharing how I get to do my version of Street Style Chic. 😊
Sweatshirt and biker shorts are both from CHAMPION Similar sweatshirt here and here. More options in the widget below
What I love most about street style is that these days, anything goes. You don’t have to be into hip-hop, an athlete or look like any of the older stereotypes. You can definitely mix and match and put your own twist to it. Sans the big gold jewelry or teeth grills 😅Here are the things I pay attention to make turn ordinary street style basics into chic pieces:
Color. As shown on previous posts, I have been so into neutrals this year, although I still love my colors. What used to be only earth toned sweaters now comes in a variety of neutrals for the 2018 edition. And I am obsessed! I love the pinks, tans, light yellow, light brown sweatshirts and hoodies because I can match them with most things I already have in my closet!😉
Size. I am actually not a fan of super oversized clothing, which was definitely the trend of the 90’s. I like my clothes to have a bit of space for comfort, but not extremely huge as I feel it overwhelms my frame. Remember ladies, the bigger the size you have on, the bigger you look. And overly baggy clothes does not work well with extremely small figures.
Designs. You may think that street style is really just basic everyday clothes that you already own. And you are damn right girl! 😁Now how do you make basics more interesting and fun is by playing up the style factor. I personally like graphic print, maybe some logos, a band or a cartoon character on my tops be it a shirt, or a hoodie. Pair it with plain jeans or a cute skirt and that makes an interesting outfit!
Break the rules. Because there are none. And this goes for all sexes, races, ages and genders. Yes! My recent way of shopping has me scouting the men’s section of most stores actually. Why? Because the clothes fit better! Especially jackets, shirts and sweatshirts. Try it sometime, you’ll be surprised on your finds! 😉
Similar biker shorts here and here.
Prize does not matter. I have found amazing pieces on thrift shops believe it or not. Pre-owned clothing is also an amazing treasure hunt for me. The possibilities are endless! Just make sure that the item is still wearable and in good condition.
The older the better. This means your own closet. Shop your closet sometime and you’ll be surprised on what you can find there. Distressed tee? Yup. An old oversized graphic tee paired with a cute mini works too. And so does vintage pieces of clothing your parents, husband, or even your grandparents may own. Want Daddy shoes? Grab your dad’s old sneakers. The best part is they’re free! If you find an item in which the fit is a bit off like a jacket, I would use a cute belt to enhance the waist. 😊
And there you have it, some of my tips to achieve street style chic. You don’t always have to buy expensive pieces all at once to look the part, you just have to know where to look. 😉My personal brand faves for street wear are Champion, Adidas, Topshop to name a few. I think this trend will be here for awhile, if not for it’s cult following. What do you think of street style clothing? Have you tried it? Which items do you love? Let me know on the comments below!
