“I need to clean my closet,” – I tell myself, Every. 👏 Single.👏 Damn time.👏Ughh! Is it just me or does this time of the year evoke such feelings of ‘starting fresh’ or ‘wiping the slate clean’. And if I hear the word Cleanse for another time I will just scream. I mean January has passed, but the year is still in it’s infancy and certainly are the possibilities for one’s world domination or who knows maybe that second date. Lol.
But seriously for me, my online shopping habit has gotten out of hand that clothes are literally bursting out of my drawers, spilling out of racks and there are just waay too many clothes for me to realistically wear on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis. And given that it’s still pretty darn cold outside (and corona virus fears) I’m pretty much cooped up in my little apartment, hence the conclusion that I do not need all these clothes.
Add to the fact that our landlord is giving us basically a couple of months to vacate our condo (Welcome to the California rental cap!!😡)I basically need to get rid of some of these clothes like, now. I decided to list my clothes online. Specifically on the millennial ebay app called Depop.

Now I am not one of those bigshot influencers who have so much designer clothing, shoes and jewelry. I’m actually pretty modest in my purchases and do not own expensive stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I can afford to do so, but the thought of buying something that’s going to sit in my closet and get barely used is just so unreasonable for me. Or maybe if its something that I can use daily like a wallet or work bag, that might be justifiable… but–I just can’t! 😬
So here I am pre-move for the the nth time in my life, trying to clean out some items from my closet. Here’s what I learned so far:
1. I have lots of clothes that were NEVER worn! I think it’s the novelty of having new stuff all the time, that power of the purchase, and after that novelty is worn off, it’s like I’m on to the next thing. Online shopping has made it so much easier to accumulate (or hoard) things that sometimes, I lose track of what I already own and end up buying the same things.
2. Stuff that doesn’t fit should definitely be taken out of one’s closet. You know that pair of skinny jeans that is like 2 sizes small, you never wear them because they don’t fit but keep it anyway since you never know..that day might come..sell it and move on girl!!!!😩
3. The amount of stuff I have that I don’t use is staggering. Omg for sure! I procrastinated on clearing out some space in my walk in closet that it legit could be an episode of Hoarders the TV show. 😱I feel like I was in denial that I had accumulated so much stuff, that it went from cute to unhealthy. At this point I am acknowledging that I have a problem and it has to stop!! I haven’t bought more stuff I promise!🙋🏻♀️
4. The environmental impact. As I surround myself with all these clothes, I can’t help but think of the environmental impact of accumulating clothing and then discarding them, barely used. Think about the amount of water used to manufacture textiles and fabric, especially denim, also the amount of carbon footprint that online shopping has is definitely an eye opener. I recently have watched a documentary about how most clothing and textiles don’t get recycled, but thrown away and incinerated instead. It’s very sad. Part of the solution is the lack of reuse. We buy then donate/throw it out. I vow to reuse a lot of my older clothing and give it new life if need be. 😊
5. I am not attached to my clothes. Some people are too attached to things like their car or bags and whatnot. I am not one of them, thank God. For me if they don’t serve a purpose in my life, things do not need to be on it. Kinda like the Marie Kondo philosophy of closet cleaning. Only keep things that give you joy, or for me purpose as well.
While I know I’ll probably not be like those teenagers making thousands or millions in this platform, just giving my clothes a new life with their new owners is good enough. After all isn’t that what new year’s all about? A new start? 😉
How about you what is your current closet state? Are you a well organized babe without a bad online shopping habit like me, or do you sell your stuff online too? I’d like to know where! Sound off on the comments below!😊
Shop all of these clothes and more on my baby Depop shop here. I’m currently adding more stuff so there’s not a ton up yet. 😉Thank you for being here and reading!❤️🤗
